Day 20 Veille-Aure

Just had first easy day in a long while although it was very hot on the descent to manage to arrive in a village before the restuarant stopped serving (brilliant 10euro menu)- but only just. Previous day was a 10.5 hour heat slog with the highest point of the trek included at 2509m. Brilliant views though. Couple of short days then a big one to Bagneres de Luchon and then the Ariége (very remote - need to carry food).
Thunderstorm now and I'm about 800m away in a cybecafe. Think it's stopped
Bye.

  1. Some information which might be useful. In Luchon, there is a spa at the top of the high street “L’allée d’Etigny”: good for weary legs.

In the Ariège there is a new hostel which you may not know about at the Pla de la Lau (near to the Valier mountain), called Centre d’accueil du Pla de La Lau. It is between the hostels at Estoéou and Esbints on the river Ribérot, where the river is crossed by the GR10. I haven’t been there so you will need to check that it is really open. Contact : Annie or Bernard, tél.05.61.01.01.01, http://www.ariege.com/la-maison-du-valier/info.html E-mail : maisonvalier@orange.fr

The hostel at Esbints a little further on is very welcoming [picture on top right http://www.pyreneanway.com/luchon-merens.shtml]. Say hello to Gila from me.

Further on, after Goulier there are no hostels for a long while, but the Cabane de Courtal Marti http://www.pyrenees-refuges.com/fr/affiche.php?numenr=105, a day’s walk away is better than nothing.

By the way, a very useful site for huts is http://www.pyrenees-refuges.com/

  2. Thanks Steve especially as I've just lost most of a day due to ankle suffering between Luchon and Fos. This is no longer sensible for anyone with camping gear due to diversions. Having arrived in Luchon at 2pm, my recommendation would be to continue to Artigues in the early evening or book in a hotel do the section with no pack then hitch back, and hitch/bus or taxi in the morning as early as possible. Your suggestions will come in useful been looking at options earlier this afternoon.
